"The Pool" Rules

  • You are given schools from the following conferences (and independent schools): The American, ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Mountain West, Pac-12, SEC, Notre Dame, UMass, and UConn.
  • When making your selections for the week, certain teams that are showing on the "Eligible Games" list might have one of the following color designations:
    • Red - you have already picked this team and cannot pick them again
    • Grey - this team is outside of the eligible conferences and independent schools (see above for full breakdown)
  • You may select any game throughout the weekend (e.g., Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday etc.) as long as the team is eligible to be picked and the game has not started yet. There is no timeframe to submit your picks, but games auto-lock when they kick-off (i.e., you cannot select a team once their game has begun).
  • Saturday, November 30th will represent the final week of The Pool, making for a total of 14 weeks.
  • The AP Top 25 Poll will be used to determine team tiers, until the first College Football Playoff Poll is released. We will then use the CFP Poll for the remaining weeks in November.
  • If all five of your schools win on a given Saturday, you will be awarded one additional bonus point.
  • You are allowed to revise any of your selections until the specific game has kicked off (i.e., if the game has kicked off, you are locked into that pick).
  • On your “Make Picks” tab, your available schools will be highlighted green, and schools that have been used will be highlighted in red.
  • Scoring is based on the tier system that was laid in the sign-up form. A detailed breakdown of the scoring is as follows:
    • If you select a team ranked outside of the Top 25 (until the first CFP Poll on October 31st) to defeat a team ranked 21-25, this will be considered a "first tier upset" and will be worth two points (a.k.a., "two-point play").
    • If you select a team ranked outside of the Top 25 to defeat a team ranked 16-20, this will be considered a "second tier upset" and will be worth three points (a.k.a., "three-point play").
    • If you select a team ranked outside of the Top 25 to defeat a team ranked 11-15, this will be considered a "third tier upset" and will be worth four points (a.k.a., "four-point play").
    • If you select a team ranked outside of the Top 25 to defeat a team ranked 6-10, this will be considered a "fourth tier upset" and will be worth five points (a.k.a., "five-point play").
    • If you select a team ranked outside of the Top 25 to defeat a team ranked 2-5, this will be considered a "fifth tier upset" and will be worth six points (a.k.a., "six-point play").
    • If you select a team ranked outside of the Top 25 to defeat a team ranked number one, this will be considered a "golden upset" and will be worth ten points (a.k.a., "ten-point play").
    • Successful selection of ranked vs. ranked upsets will be awarded by the amount of tiers separating your upset (minimum award of two points, with the exception of selecting a school to defeat the number-one ranked team).
    • For example, if you select #21 to defeat #20 and they successfully do so, you are jumping one tier and are awarded two points.
    • If you select #21 to defeat #15 and they successfully do so, you are jumping two tiers and are awarded three points.
    • If you select #21 to defeat #2 and they successfully do so, you are jumping four tiers and are awarded five points.
    • If you select #20 to defeat #2 and they successfully do so, you are jumping three tiers and are awarded four points.
    • If you select #12 to defeat #11, you are not jumping any tiers and your selection is worth the standard one point.
    • If you select a ranked school to defeat number one, you will be awarded three points plus the amount of tiers you jump.
    • For example, if you select #21 to defeat #1 and they successfully do so, you are jumping the maximum of five tiers (six points) and are awarded the additional three points for a total of nine points on the win.
    • If you select #20 to defeat #1 and they successfully do so, you are jumping four tiers (five points) and are awarded the additional three points for a total of eight points on the win.
    • If you select #2 to defeat #1 and they successfully do so, you are jumping one tier (two points) and are awarded the additional three points for a total of five points on the win.
  • Monetary breakdowns will be as follows:
    • First place: 35%
    • Second place: 15%
    • Third place: 10%
    • Fourth place: 7%
    • Fifth place: 3%
    • High Scorer of the Week total jackpot: 30%
  • If there is a tie for first, second, third, fourth, or fifth place at the conclusion of Week 14, a tiebreaker scenario will be implemented:
    • SEC (Saturday, December 7th)
    • Big Ten (Saturday, December 7th)
    • ACC (Saturday, December 7th)
    • Big 12 (Saturday, December 7th)
  • The High Scorer of the Week total jackpot will only be paid out if there is a solo winner. If there is not a solo winner, the money will be rolled over to the following week until a solo winner emerges. If there is no solo winner at the conclusion of the final week (Week 14), the jackpot will be split evenly among the co-high scorers from Week 14.
